Tie Dyed Paper - Will it Work?

The challenge over at A Vintage Journey this week is Just Stain It using your distress stains. This product is fairly new to me but after getting my first bottle about 3 months ago I very quickly realised it to be a must in my craft room. I love how backgrounds turn out and the ease of colouring ribbon, flowers and die cuts makes it perfect for my style of craft.

After a couple of days of thinking about this challenge and looking at the DT 's samples and Tim's blog I realised that distress stains sometimes takes on a look of being tie dyed. Could I actually manage to tie dye a piece of paper with distress stains ? Maybe not but I was going to try.

I started off by wetting a piece of water colour paper and scrunching it up and tied with elastic bands and pressed my colour into the sections. But when I opened it up I realised my paper was too heavy to take the stain in every area. But using a lighter weight watercolour paper I felt would dissolve.

Next attempt, I lifted a piece of copy paper knowing this would just breakdown if I added water I decided to use my mix of Glycerine and water (1 part to 6) and sprayed on my paper on both sides. This softened the paper but didn't make it go extra limp. I then applied my bands and repeated process. It nearly worked but the paper had torn quite a bit with the bands.

So finally I repeated my process of the Glycerine, scrunching my paper from the centre but this time I tied a length of elastic band into the sections rather than wrapping round and round. I squeezed different colours of stain into my paper squeezing each section. I then cut my bands and unravelled the paper and dried with the heat gun. Yippee it worked and I love the effect.

I distressed the edges and then mounted my tie dyed paper onto black card stock and stained my flowers the way Tim shows you swiping my die cuts through the stains. My leaves I also added some texture from a stamp with Archival ink. My little metal embellishment was painted with distress ink and my ribbons were made from an old sheet ripped up and stained.

Painted Industrial CC3 Challenge

Hope you are all having a lovely weekend and managing to get some crafty time and a warm hello to my new followers. The latest challenge at Linda Ledbetter's Compendium of Curiosities is painted industrial. Although I can't tell you how to do the technique you will find it out Page 46 of Tim's new book.

I started with a little bargain frame which had a burlap centre, my husband had kindly brought it into me as a present knowing I would enjoy altering it. I sanded it down and painted it adding some tissue tape.

I'll just show you round some photo's now as can't give too much away and a lot is self explanatory.

A Royal Christmas

Hello everyone and a warm welcome to my new followers. 

For my DT project this week at Cheery Lynn Designs, I have made another Christmas card to showcase the beautiful Snowflake Doily die from Cheery Lynn's new release. This die blends itself to Christmas and any other occasion depending on what shade of paper you choose. I decided to give it a regal theme so stuck mainly to reds and golds in my card.

I cut my doily out in gold card and offset the angel wing behind in red card stock and added some diamantés around the circumference and mounted my poinsettia flower on the top with a dazzle in the centre.

You will see I cut out my Lattice Valance die in red card and I love the way it frames my card. I also paper pieced in some gold card behind my die cut which helps to make it pop.

I extended my Horizon stacker die, paper piecing behind my doily, you will also notice I used part of the Lattice Valance die across the centre band, adding a Greetings message and stickles around my card to finish.

Altered Chest

A warm hello to all my kind followers.

It's a been about a month since I did a mixed media piece, seems longer so I decided with the various things I have lying in my craft room just begging to be altered, I thought I would alter this little chest combining it with the challenge at Country-view challenges and That's Crafty.

I bought this little chest from our local B&M store, they always have great things which are   reasonably priced which are fab to alter. I started off by giving this a sand down and then applied some Grunge Paste through my stencil. I love this doily pattern. I also placed little die cut corners onto the drawers. Once dried, I next sealed my whole box and drawers with a couple of coats of Gesso applied with a baby wipe, leaving to thoroughly dry.

I then started to blend 4 shades of PaperArtsy paints onto my chest, sanding back every so often to reveal different layers. Once I was happy with the shade I used a script stamp to apply some more Gesso and an Archival ink to apply some crackles. I then started to rub a little Gesso around the corners in the same way we blend distress inks at the edges. This just made it a little more shabbier looking.

My Butterflies were stamped onto a paper handkerchief with Archival. I then tore around the edges and applied the one ply of tissue with some multi medium to my chest. I then sealed my whole chest with a couple of coats of multi medium added some pearls and Treasure wax.

My daughter had handed me a bag filled with some old Jewellery a few weeks ago. I made my little feet from one of the bracelets painting the beads with Gesso and applying Treasure Gold. Finally applying some hot glue to glue them onto my chest. I also lined my drawers with a little square of felt.
